Types of Appliances

 

Orthodontic treatment can include more appliances than just braces. Usually these other items are only used in extreme cases. However, the can be a vital part of your treatment, improving your health and appearance.

 

Palate Expander

Palatal Expander

This appliance is used to widen the upper jaw to make sure that the alignment between the two jaws is improved. The appliance is placed against the roof of the mouth and is cemented to the sides of the upper teeth.

This appliance is used to move the lower jaw forward to correct cases of significant overbite, improving the size of the airway and altering the appearance of the chin.

Fixed Retainer

This appliance is placed after treatment is complete in order to maintain the desired position of the teeth. Custom-made wires are bonded to the insides of the upper and lower arches.

These connect one tooth to another with the goal of improving the positioning of the teeth. They apply steady pressure to guide the teeth.

TPA

Transpalatal Arch (TPA)

Typically used after an expander, this fixed retainer runs across your palate to hold your teeth in place. . It can also be used to hold space when a primary tooth is lost earlier than usual.

Lingual Arch

A lingual arch is an orthodontic device which connects two molars in the upper or lower dental arch. The lower lingual arch (LLA) has an archwire adapted to the lingual side of the lower teeth.

 

TAD 
Temporary Anchorage Devices (TAD)

When the upper jaw does not form correctly, it can reduce the quality of your breathing and lead to improper jaw function. This device is designed to create space for all teeth to sit correctly and to improve respiratory function.

Carriere Distalizer Devices

The Carriere Distalizer addresses the problem of incorrectly erupting teeth by pushing them backwards to correct the bite. Its overall effect is similar to a headgear but it does not employ the usage of a bulky appliance.
